How can I scan my books into ebooks?

I have a library that I’d like to save for posterity in digital form. Short of scanning each page by hand with a flat bed scanner, is there an effective method for digitizing my library?

You could try seeing if any of the books are available in a digital form. Otherwise you would have to scan them in page by page, and if you wanted them as actual text rather then an image of the page you would have to use OCR software and go through and fix all the errors afterwards manually. (Spell checkers can help a bit, but may not be enough alone.)
(Note that if some of that library contains really old books on which the copyright has since expired you could take a look at Project Gutenberg and see if they’re in there.)
